Dear Governor Schwarzenegger –
Americans often celebrate their freedoms.
Why do we have the freedom to choose our deity, but not the freedom to choose our spouse?
Sincerely,
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger –
Americans often celebrate their freedoms.
Why do we have the freedom to choose our deity, but not the freedom to choose our spouse?
Sincerely,
I'm a guy who just wants to be the best husband and father that I can be. But because I'm gay, I've had to overcome some pretty significant obstacles to recreate the legal and social structure that everybody else gets through marriage.
I believe California - and the whole country - would be better off if all committed couples had the freedom to commit to marriage. Not only is it silly to block people from achieving their full potential in our economy and society, it also offends my sense of justice to see some couples told their relationship is less worthy, less equal or less important than others. As Dick Cheney says, "Freedom means Freedom for everyone."
Governor Schwarzenegger has been wonderfully supportive of domestic partnership, civil unions and LGBT issues - but his support mysteriously stops short of marriage. I figured that if the Opponents of Equality could convince the Governor to take away my freedom, I could convince him to restore it. So I started to write to him to ask him to get government off of my back - and this is the result. I hope it gives you as much pleasure and inspiration as it has me.
